In this article you will learn more about Polyurethane Foam, its properties and advantages that make it beneficial for the production of mattresses.
What is Polyurethane Foam?
Polyurethane Foam (PPU) is a foam that consists of 95% air. Its properties imitate natural latex, but it is characterized by a lower price, as its production is relatively cheap. Polyurethane Foam comes in various degrees of hardness, which allows it to be combined with other materials to achieve the best properties for the products. Often combinations with natural latex, coconut fibres and hollo fibres are possible.

Why is this foam used in mattresses?
Polyurethane Foam mattresses have good durability. The higher the density, the heavier the mattress can be loaded – the load can be up to 140 kg. But even at the highest density, it has the elasticity and firmness necessary for a comfortable sleep.
Features of polyurethane foam mattresses
- Low cost. This is the main advantage of polyurethane foam over similar products made from natural materials. If you compare the cost of mattresses made of polyurethane foam with natural latex, the difference can be very large.
- Elasticity and compliance. The material has an excellent ability to recover after unloading, and in this parameter even surpasses natural latex. Thin innerspring mattresses made of polyurethane foam can even be rolled up, but should not be stored in this form for a long time.
- Air permeability. The structure of polyurethane foam consists of many pores through which air can circulate freely. A mattress with polyurethane foam does not absorb moisture and odours. This is especially important when buying a mattress for a baby. If a baby mattress gets wet for any reason, it is not ruined. It is enough to wring it out and air dry it for several hours.
- Orthopaedic effect. Dense polyurethane foam types, which have a higher stiffness than normal, provide good support for the spine during sleep. There are also unique models with hardness zones and massage effect.
